Purity culture lives on, and a new generation of influencers on social media as well as recent books are pushing it mainstream. On of his wildly popular book, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” Harris wrote, “Try looking up ‘dating’ in your Bible’s concordance. ![]() Sound familiar? It’s a take-two of Joshua Harris’ central message in 1997: Pursue a romantic relationship only for the purpose of marriage. In it, the young pastor said: “Dating - the word - is not in the Bible, but the concept of what we call dating is honestly practicing divorce.” In November, a TikTok clip of popular pastor Mike Todd talking about dating went viral on Twitter. Uploaded in September 2019, it’s been viewed more than 1.8 million times on YouTube. Cameron learns something valuable in the moment, and that knowledge is what allows her to reach the book/film’s pensive conclusion.īeyond this moment, though, the movie lost sight of what made the book such an acclaimed and highly readable gem. That’s why the film adaptation of Cameron Post retains the above quote from the book it’s an emotional high point and a thesis statement sputtered by a man laid low by his stumbling, and in its way it contradicts the title. Much of being a graceful adult involves giving people the leeway to stumble through these questions the same as you do. Beyond that, the film more or less falls apart. The commitment to atmosphere is obvious - the costumes _are_ positively marvelous, and the cinematography is also quality. Unfortunately, the potential of these new ideas is never fully explored, rather, they are reintroduced and reintroduced as if to say, "Hey, look what I thought of! Isn't that great?" It seems that Argento got so caught up in the atmosphere and style of the movie that he forgot there was actually a story going on. Some of these elements include - the Phantom having been raised by rats, the Phantom is not (externally) deformed, and therefore, does not wear the mask that is almost mandatory for the part (despite the fact that it appears on the cover - though it does make a haunting appearance in one scene, if you can catch it in the background). ![]() ![]() The film introduces several new and interesting elements to the Phantom story, which by now has been rehashed ad nauseum.
